You can get to the site by buses 244\, 299 and 311 and many more. All basic materials and equipment will be provided\, including needles\, thread\, scissors\, fabric scraps\, and iron-on patches. Simply bring along the items you’d like to repair—whether that’s one well-loved piece or a few items you’ve been meaning to fix. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Mark Spencer to record the fungi of Lesnes Abbey Woods and delve into the fascinating world of mycology. \n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFungi are a diverse group of organisms that include moulds\, yeasts\, and mushrooms\, and are classified in their own kingdom separate from plants and animals. They reproduce by releasing spores and obtain nutrients by breaking down organic matter\, often playing a vital role as decomposers in ecosystems. Fungi can be beneficial\, such as in food production\, medicine (e.g. antibiotics)\, and nutrient recycling\, but some species are harmful\, causing diseases in plants\, animals\, and humans. \nJoin like-minded people with an interest in recording wildlife observations for a day identifying and recording fungi in an informal environment. Naturalists of all levels (from beginner to expert) will be able to share their experiences with peers and help one another improve their knowledge and build confidence in biological recording\, all under the guidance of mycologist Mark Spencer. \n\n\n\n\nWhat will the day involve?\n\nPractical experience of finding and identifying fungi in the field.\nAccess to an experienced mycologist and the opportunity to discuss field mycology.\nA chance to meet fellow like-minded people from a range of different disciplines.\n\nWhat do I need to know in advance?\n\nThis event is aimed at adults only.\nAttendance is free\, but booking is essential as spaces are limited.\nFungi recorders of all abilities are welcome.\nIdentification will take place in the field whenever possible\, but some fungi specimens may need to be collected and preserved for accurate identification.\nThis is not a foraging event. We have a strict no foraging policy on our recording events.\nWe’ll be outside for the whole day so please bring suitable clothing for all types of weather\, as well as your lunch and any snacks you will require with you on the day.\n\nThis event is being run as a collaboration between the Biological Recording Company and Lesnes Abbey Woods as part of the Lesnes 500 project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

DESCRIPTION:Our resident Archaeologist Anthony Thomas will share his current research delving deep into Lesnes Abbey’s past\, reaching back to Prehistoric\, Roman and late Saxo-Norman time.  Go back in time with Anthony as he shares his findings about how the abbey was laid on top of buildings from earlier periods.  Surveys completed 2025 have indicated a number of small stone built platform-floors\, which seem to represent a series of muti-period sequences of several industrial style timber-framed and stone building structures associated with external kilns-ovens and other domestic activities.

Recording beetle species enables site managers to identify and protect important habitats and maintain the ecological balance of our green spaces. \nOn this Field Recorder Day\, we invite you to join fellow nature enthusiasts for a day dedicated to finding\, identifying\, and recording beetles in a relaxed and supportive setting. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced naturalist\, this event offers a great opportunity to share knowledge\, build confidence in biological recording\, and refine your identification skills – all with guidance from beetle specialist Connor Butler. \n\n\n\n\nWhat will the day involve?\n\nHands-on experience using different methods to collect and record a variety of beetle families.\nPractical training in specimen collection and preservation.\nGuidance on identifying beetles in the field and understanding which specimens require further examination under a microscope.\nA chance to connect with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds who share an interest in entomology and wildlife recording.

DESCRIPTION:Join Imogen Cavadino-Phillips to explore and record the molluscs of Lesnes Abbey Woods.\n\n\n\nMolluscs are an ecologically important and often overlooked part of the UK’s terrestrial invertebrate fauna. Slugs and snails play key roles as decomposers\, herbivores\, prey\, and even soil engineers\, helping to break down organic matter\, recycle nutrients\, and support food webs. Many species are sensitive to microclimate\, soil chemistry\, and vegetation structure\, making them also highly informative indicators of habitat condition. From a conservation perspective\, recording molluscs on a site provides valuable insight into ecosystem health\, and long-term environmental change. Because several species have narrow ecological tolerances or are nationally scarce\, documenting their presence can help identify high-quality or threatened habitats and support evidence-based site management. \n\n\n\n\nJoin like-minded nature enthusiasts for a day of finding\, identifying and recording slugs and snails. Naturalists of all levels (from total beginner to expert) are encouraged to attend\, share their experiences with peers and help one another improve their knowledge and build confidence in biological recording. Mollusc specialist Imogen Cavadino-Phillips will be leading the day and providing guidance throughout. \n\n\n\n\nWhat will the day involve?\n\nHands-on experience using different methods to find and record slugs and snails.\nGuidance on identifying mollusc species in the field where possible\, and understanding which specimens require further examination under a microscope.\nA chance to connect with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds who share an interest in entomology and wildlife recording.

DESCRIPTION:Overview \nJoin us for a General Field Recorder Day at Lesnes Abbey Woods – no taxonomic focus\, we will be recording a bit of everything! \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin like-minded people with an interest in recording wildlife observations for a day identifying and recording in an informal environment. Naturalists of all levels (from beginner to expert) will be able to share their experiences with peers and help one another improve their knowledge and build confidence in biological recording. \n\n\nWhat will the day involve?\n\nPractical experience of finding and identifying a range of species in the field.\nThe opportunity to share expertise and teach others.\nA chance to meet fellow like-minded people from a range of different disciplines.\n\n\n\n\nWhat do I need to know in advance? \n\nThis event is aimed at adults only.\nAttendance is free\, but booking is essential as spaces are limited.\nRecorders of all abilities are welcome.\nIdentification will take place in the field whenever possible\, but some specimens may need to be collected to be observed in more detail and identified at a later date.\nWe’ll be outside for the whole day so please bring suitable clothing for the weather\, as well as lunch and any snacks you will require with you on the day.

DESCRIPTION:Calling all young palaeontologists! Join us at Lesnes Abbey’s very own fossil pit for 1 and 1/2 hours of fossil digging. You will have the chance to discover and take home fossils such as shells and shark’s teeth which are approximately 55 million years old. You will be provided with all the equipment and guidance needed to find the fossils and identify them.  There are three sessions to choose from:- \n10am-11:30am\n1pm – 2.30pm \nThese workshops are being subsidised by a grant from National Lottery Heritage Fund. \n

SUMMARY:Mosaic Tile Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Lesnes Abbey is home to a large mosaic which shows the medieval life of the monks that used to live here. Come along to our event to have a go at tile smashing and making a mosaic of your own design. Maybe you will create your own coat of arms or your favourite pet or animal – the only limit is your imagination. All safety equipment and materials will be provided. \nThis is a 2 hour workshop\, children must be accompanied by an adult. Workshops are either at 10am or 1.30pm. \n*Event info: please bring a strong bag to carry your mosaic home in. Tickets are per child (adults come free) \nThese workshops have been subsided by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and players of the National Lottery. \n
